A consultant physician, nephrologist, researcher, and national leader in renal medicine, Dr. Mweemba has spent more than two decades working to ensure that patients battling kidney disease are given not only treatment but hope.
Today he serves as the National Coordinator for Nephrology Services under Zambia’s Ministry of Health and is widely regarded as one of the country’s foremost specialists in kidney diseases, primarily based at the University Teaching Hospital.
Yet behind these titles is a story rooted in inspiration, mentorship, and an unwavering commitment to saving lives.
Dr. Mweemba’s journey into medicine began long before he wore a white coat. Growing up in Zambia’s Southern Province, he completed his early education in Livingstone in 1987.
His passion for medicine was shaped at home. His father worked as a clinical officer while his mother served as a nurse two professions that placed service to humanity at the center of daily life. Watching their dedication to caring for patients planted a powerful seed in the young Mweemba.
Motivated by that example, he later enrolled at the University of Zambia School of Medicine to pursue a career in healthcare.
Over the past 26 years, Dr. Mweemba has built a distinguished career in kidney medicine. His work focuses on diagnosing , treating and managing conditions that affect the kidneys, including chronic kidney disease, hypertension-related kidney damage, and complications arising from HIV.
But beyond the technical complexity of nephrology, what keeps him motivated is something deeply human.
“The greatest fulfillment in nephrology,” he says, “is when a patient whose life is in imminent danger is given a lifeline and the chance to continue living.”
For many patients facing kidney failure, treatment can mean long hours on dialysis machines or limited access to specialized care. Dr. Mweemba’s work has focused on changing that reality.
In a country where kidney disease often brings devastating financial and emotional consequences for families, Dr. Mweemba’s work is quietly changing the narrative.
Through his leadership in nephrology services, expansion of transplant programs, and commitment to research and training, he is helping Zambia build a future where advanced kidney care is more accessible and sustainable.
Perhaps the greatest testament to his impact lies in the patients who walk out of hospital doors after once facing the uncertainty of kidney failure.
For them, Dr. Aggrey Mweemba is more than a specialist.
He is a lifeline.
And for Zambia’s healthcare system, he remains one of the steady forces guiding kidney medicine toward a stronger and more hopeful future.
In this exclusive interview, with the Renal Society of Zambia Media Team , Dr. Aggrey Mweemba shares the story behind Zambia’s growing kidney transplant program and the future of renal care.
